FOR RELEASE: MONDAY,
FEBRUARY 17TH, 2003
LEUVEN, BELGIUM – February 17th 2003 – Option
(Nasdaq Europe: OPIN), a leading supplier in wireless
data communication equipment, today announced that it
will demonstrate 3G UMTS Streaming Video technology at
3GSM World Congress in Cannes, the premier annual wireless
event and the global meeting place for the industry. The
demonstration will be conducted using its 3G UMTS GlobeTrotter
PC data card, which was developed in cooperation with
Lucent Technologies.
Option’s stand (Hall 2, G4) will feature its portfolio
of wireless data delivery products, including its GlobeTrotter
GPRS wireless data card, which is widely deployed by mobile
operators. Additionally, Option will -- for the first
time -- perform a demonstration of a 3G UMTS GlobeTrotter
PC Data Card using Streaming Video technology. Option’s
3G UMTS PC Card, co-developed with Lucent Technologies,
incorporates a base band UMTS/GPRS chipset from PrairieComm,
the US supplier of 3G UMTS wireless technologies.
The Option technology demonstration shows 3G Streaming
Video at very high speeds. Option uses a 384 kpbs radio
bearer and achieves a stable, continuous throughput of
360 kbps streaming video over the well-known RTP protocol.
This technology is a highly versatile solution for mobile
operators, supporting streaming video, VPN, data transfer,
web technology, multimedia applications and more.
"Together with our partners, we have been monitoring
the development and growth of the 3G Streaming Video market
very closely," says Douglas Ros, VP Business Development
& Marketing for Option. "It's a logical move
for us because the wireless data equipment industry is
mirroring the video-broadcasting industry in the adoption
of 3G technology and in the growing importance of the
wireless data communication for professional users. The
Streaming Video applications that we are showing at 3GSM
Congress in Cannes this week demonstrate the potential
user experience and data throughput capabilities of our
3G GlobeTrotter UMTS PC card technology."
"We are delighted to be working with Option in this
exciting partnership," says Bruce Dale, vice president
for UMTS product and offer realization with Lucent Technologies.
"Professional customers always want to communicate
faster and to have data communication of the highest and
most secure quality. Option is an acknowledged leader
in wireless data terminals, and together we are meeting
the needs of mobile operators for high-speed data capabilities.”
Option can be found in Hall 2 Stand G4 at the 3GSM World
Congress being held in Cannes, France, from the 18th through
to the 21st February 2003.
