Usage on a desktop computer

Can an Option device be used on a desktop computer?

4/02/2009

Option® has 3 types of devices: USB, fixed mobile devices and data cards (PCMCIA/Express). Each of these types has different requirements.

A USB device can be used in both desktops and laptops with a USB slot.
Our fixed mobile devices offer Internet access to any Wi-Fi equipped device, whether it is a laptop or a desktop, without need for a fixed line public network connection.
No need either for any additional software installation on the PC.

PCMCIA/Express cards with a desktop computer are not recommended or supported by OPTION.
Provided the PC Card reader or adapter is correctly installed in your desktop computer it should be possible to work with the GlobeTrotter® PC Card solutions.
Desktop computer configurations can however have problems with resource allocation or communication with the PC card after installation due to incompatibility of hardware on the desktop itself. It is possible that the BIOS settings or proprietary software or features of your desktop computer cause problems with the PC Card adapter or built in PC card slot (timing problems over the serial link, power management issues, driver compatibility…). External PC card slot adapters or PC card slots to built in are available from several manufacturers, for example:

Note: keep in mind that for the 32-bit Cardbus PC Cards you need a Cardbus 32-bit compatible PC card slot.
We cannot make any claims as to how well our PC Card solutions will work with these PC Card readers.
If you have any questions, please contact the PC Card reader manufacturer.
