How to put my device on PAP?

4/02/2009

When your Option modem makes a connection with the internet through a 2G GPRS or a 3G UMTS/HSPA network, it will use the PPP (point-to-point) protocol which the user will normally not notice. This protocol has 2 possibilities of authentication: PAP (password authentication protocol) and CHAP (Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol). Normally when connecting to the internet with your device, the selection of the authentication is done automatically, but in some cases, for example with company VPN’s using a separate APN, CHAP is not supported and a connection using PAP cannot be done automatically. In this case, you have to select the PAP authentication protocol manually. In case you are using an Option connection manager delivered with your product, you cannot change this setting manually.

There is only one possibility to change to PAP manually, and this is in the case your Option product has a modem device instead of a network adapter.
Many Option products do still have a modem device. In case your Option product does not have a modem device (but only a network adapter is present), there is no easy way to switch to the PAP setting (disabling CHAP). To find out if you have a modem device, go to the Windows device manager (Control Panel ->System -> Device Manager), and check the tab “Modems”:

In the above example, you can see that a modem device is present

Change the authentication setting to only use PAP (Windows Dialup Configuration)

Open an existing (or create a new one) Windows Dialup configuration used to connect to the internet, and go to “Properties”:

Select the “Security” tab, select “Advanced (custom settings) and select “Settings”:

The following screen will appear:

Disable all protocols except for “Unencrypted password (PAP)”

Press OK and try to make your connection again as it will now use PAP for authentication.
